In numerous safety scenarios, visibility is recognized as the primary line of defense. The importance of wearing reflective apparel is widely recognized; its efficacy is well-documented. Regardless of the setting—be it the highway, a warehouse, or a parking lot—the wearing of such apparel can lead to a marked increase in a worker's conspicuity. From a psychological perspective, individuals tend to be drawn to bright, contrasting colors and shiny surfaces. Research and natural analogies demonstrate that bright signals attract attention and communicate caution.

Reflective vests achieve visibility through two mechanisms: color and retroreflection. During daylight hours, the neon fabric (in hues of lime green or orange) is conspicuous against most backgrounds, prompting a "safety alert" response in drivers. In conditions of reduced illumination, such as during nighttime hours or in dimly lit environments, the retroreflective stripes become particularly salient. When light from vehicle headlights strikes these stripes, it undergoes a direct and immediate reflection back towards the source. The phenomenon known as the "cat's-eye" effect is responsible for the intense luminescence exhibited by the stripes, thereby ensuring that each worker is effectively illuminated, even in the context of a dark roadway. The present body of research provides substantial evidence to support the hypothesis that wearing a bright vest with reflective bands can result in a significant reduction in nighttime accidents when compared with wearing dark clothing.

Reflective shirts operate on a similar principle. In circumstances involving lower-risk zones or layering, the utilization of a high-visibility shirt with reflective trim is recommended to ensure optimal visibility of the core. A significant number of workers opt to combine both, for instance, by donning a neon shirt under a mesh vest. This double layer ensures that the body is continuously covered by a reflective material, regardless of the vest's position or configuration. Even in the absence of the vest (for example, during lunch), the shirt continues to exhibit a certain degree of visibility.

The practical benefits of this approach are evident in the professional setting. Operators of forklifts in warehouses have reported that the presence of neon coloration in the environment facilitates more rapid cessation or deceleration of their movement. In the context of highway projects, traffic controllers employ the reflective elements of their vests to ensure visibility for motorists as they navigate through merging or decelerating traffic. Security personnel engaged in nocturnal patrols are required to don jackets emblazoned with the organization's logo, a measure implemented to ensure optimal visibility on surveillance equipment. In each instance, the gear's "high-visibility" and retroreflectivity features serve as the primary mechanisms for ensuring the visibility of the workers.

To illustrate this point, consider the case of a night bridge painting crew. Each member is required to wear an ANSI Class 3 reflective vest and a matching shirt. Reflective tape is affixed to all sides of each person. As vehicles approach, the drivers become aware of the individual wearing the neon vest. As the distance between the vest and the vehicle decreases, the retroreflective stripes on the vest become more visible, as they are illuminated by the headlights of the oncoming vehicle. The combination of bright color and shine effectively prevents the crew from blending into the dark environment. In essence, the utilization of reflective shirts and vests constitutes an active safety measure. These garments effectively transform human workers into mobile luminaries, enabling others to effortlessly circumvent them.
